As you know, I am going to Sligo and Donegal next month to search for
additional DNA samples from Byrne and Burns who reside there. Only about six of the
23 members I include in my NW Cluster know where their ancestors came from.
If we are ever to crack this R1b1c7 mystery, we all have to expand in
Ireland. But that is stating the obvious. The problem is, how to locate volunteers.

I'm seeing the same thing too in a number of different surname groups -
definite subgroups of the same surname. The Bradleys (O'Brollaghans) of Ulster
are another one. A clear split in the group but probably all related. These
tend to get glossed over with a modal.
Maybe you could contact one of the local newspapers before your trip and
write an article for them on the O Byrnes of Donegal, going into the DNA and
what you know of their history. Mention your trip and say you are looking for
volunteers. That might raise a little interest before you go. The only local
newspaper I know in Donegal south of Letterkenny is a Finn Valley newspaper
called the Finn Valley Voice. I don't know if that would reach the area you
want or not. I think newspapers like to get free stuff like this with local
interest.

As an aside, the Finn Valley Voice in Donegal has endorsed John McCain for
president. He's Barra McCain's 8th cousin or something, Scots-Irish from
Antrim, some of whom settled in the Finn Valley.
I thought about doing the same thing myself in one of the Londonderry
newspapers. Never got around to it though. Who knows what might happen if the
locals know you're coming, when you'll be there, and what you're interested in.
