Thanks, John, this gives me a start. I know my grandfather went back to
Rathlacken in 1960 to sign over his share in a piece of land to one of his
brothers or cousins. Perhaps I can find that transaction and go backward
from there. Do you have any idea how I could search such a transaction?
Thanks,
Marie
Here's what Woulfe has to say about the Golden surname (MacGoldrick).
Woulfe, Patrick
Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall
Dublin :: M.H. Gill & Son,, 1923, 744 pgs.
Mag Ualgairg - Magowlricke, Magollricke,
M'Gworlick, Magolrick, Magorlick, MacGolrick,
MacGoldrick, MacGouldrick, MacGorlick, Golrick,
Goldrick, Goulrick, Gouldrick, Golderick, Godrick,
(Goulding, Golding, Golden); 'son of Ulagairg' (proud-fierce),
a favourite personal name among the O'Rourkes);
the name of a branch of the O'Rourkes in Co. Leitrim
and other parts of Connacht, in which province the
name is very common, but generally angl. Golden,
Goulding, Golding, which greatly obscures its origin.
It is also a very common surname in Fermanagh and
Donegal where, however, it probably represents a
different family.
In case you wondered I checked the 1659 census for Leitrim (territory of
O'Rourke) and did not see any surnames close to Golden, Goldrick, etc.
There was the following name in Sligo:
Barony of Correnn
McGilltrich, 8
But I have no idea if this is the same name or not.
John
