The second group of non-matching O'Neills exactly matches a number of
Greers, with both 10 and 11 occurring at 391. Unfortunately none are SNP
tested at the moment, but FT estimates their Hg as either R1b1 or R1b1c
- however, we know the unreliability of those estimates. One however,
has 67 markers, and the panel 4 zone has significant variation from most
M222+, so I doubt whether they are R1b1c7.

It's too bad the Trinity samples only have 12 markers we can use. It's hard
to say much just based on those few markers. The second O'Neill group is
the smallest, with two from Antrim, two from Tyrone, one from Donegal, and the
last just Ulster. The odd thing is all of these O'Neill samples were
basically from the same parts of Ireland.

R1b1c7 O'Neills (8)
five from Tyrone
one from Armagh
one from Down
one from Monaghan

Largest group of non R1b1c7 O'Neills (13)
seven from Tyrone
two from Armagh
one from Donegal
three from Derry

Second group of non R1bc7 O'Neills (6)
two from Tyrone
one from Donegal
two from Antrim
one says Ulster

I just don't see any real pattern here myself, one that might distinguish
O'Neill of Tyrone from O'Neill of Clannaboy. The O'Neills of the Fews were in
Armagh - Clannaboy in Antrim and Down.

According to Wikipedia, the current head of the O'Neills of Clannaboy is Dr.
Hugo Ricciardi O'Neill..
The O'Neill of the Fews is Don Carlos O'Neill the 12th Marquis of Granja.
The last is apparently claimed but not applied for (1991).

The Clan McShane web site has a DNA listing for a Baron Johnson which
matches the 2nd group of non R1b1c7 O'Neills at 12 markers.

Baron Johnson 13-24-14-10-11-14-12-12-12-13-13-29

compare to:

13-24-14- 11 or 10 -11-14-[12]-12-12-13-13-29

The Barons Johnson

"William Johnson was born to Christopher Johnson - son of William MacShane
and great, great grandson of Sir Turlough mac Henry Ó Néill - in County Meath,
Ireland in 1715. The family was originally the O'Neills of the Fews in Armagh
and thus a branch of the Uí Néill, but had been dispossessed by the Irish
Confederate Wars and the Williamite war in Ireland. William's father was
originally known as William MacShane (Ó Néill) but changed his name to the English
version of MacShane: Johnson.[1]"

I don't know if this means anything or not. The DNA sample marked Baron
Johnson matches the 3rd small group of O'Neills in Ulster (non R1b1c7), at least
at 12 markers. He is supposed to descend from the O'Neills of the Fews, a
branch of the O'Neills of Tyrone. The McShanes match the second larger group
of non R1b1c7 O'Neills. If the McShanes are O'Neills then I'm not sure what
that says about the R1b1c7 O'Neills.
