John,
As mentioned previously, in the Doherty Project of 85 participants whose results have been reported 56 have been classified as R1b1c7.? Of those 56, 18 have DYS 458 = 17.? Of those with DYS = 24 (10 out of 56), only one (and none from the previously mentioned cluster of 8) has DYS 458 = 17.

Subject: [DNA-R1B1C7] R1b1c7 and DYS 458 = 18
I'm just running through markers we're seeing in Donegal clans which are off
the R1b1c7 modal.
Another example is DYS 458. Both Mclaughlins and Dohertys are modal at DYS
458 = 18. But not all of either surname have this value. Many are 17. I
don't have the exact figures for the Dohertys but are McLaughlin results are:
McLaughin samples
15 of 21 have DYS 458 = 18
1 has DYS 458 = 19
5 have DYS 458 = 17
I checked Ysearch for the prevalence of this mutation at DYS 458 (modal
R1b1c7 = 17).
As before, I used the first 12 markers of the R1b1c7 modal, added DYS 458 =
18, 1 GD, 13 markers.
Ysearch returned 482 matches, not all of which had DYS 458 = 18 thanks to
the 1 GD parameter. In total, there were 166 samples with DYS 458 = 18. That
works out to 34.4% of the R1b1c7 matches pulled up in the search. Many of
the entries were McLaughlins and Dohertys and other samples that previously
came up in a similar search for DYS 447 = 24. That was hardly a surprise.
Since the results were heavily overweighted with McLaughlins and Dohertys, I
reduced the sampling of each to four. That reduced the matching figure to 145
which is still 30% of the results.
It's difficult to categorize the results by surnames and the list is huge so
I won't post it here. But those R1b1c7 with DYS 458 = 18 seem to cover a
much broader geographical range than those with DYS 447 = 24. There are lots
of Scottish surnames in the list, including Millikans, Dunbars, Grierson,
McAdams and a lot of Burgesses.
David Wilson's breakdown of DYS 458 = 18 seems much lower than what I found
(19% vs. 30%).
I don't know what to make of the fact that DYS 458 = 18 is modal in
Mclaughlins and Dohertys but not present in every sample. It's present in
other
Donegal DNA samples but not overwhelmingly.
