John,
So, in the O'Donnell genealogy, do you think we should slip in a
hypothetical Domnall Og as the father of Cathbarr? And what about Conn -- is he
Cathbarr's uncle, his brother, or son of a different Domnall altogether?
I don't really have a solution for that problem. The annal entry doesn't
agree with the pedigree so there's something wrong. I don't know if anyone's
really interested in the subject or not but the O'Clery Book of Genealogies
and Rawlinson B.502 have the same pedigree for the O'Donnells.
Giolla Crist -1038- m Cathbarr m Domnaill moir (o raiter .h. Domhnaill) m
Eiccneachain -906- m Dalaicch [O'Clery]
Gillai Críst m. Cathbairr m. Domnaill m. Éicnich m. Dálaich [Rawlinson
B.502]
However, the Book of Leinster (c. 1170) interjects a name between Domnaill
and Cathbarr in the pedigree.
Muirchertaigh
Dalaig
Ecnecain
Donaill
...........
Cathbarr
Unfortunately I can't read the name. But this would agree with the annal
entry describing Cathbarr as a "grandson of Domnall."
U1038.2
Gilla Críst, son of Cathbarr ua Domnaill, was killed by the son of Conn ua
Domnaill.
Probably Conn was a brother of Cathbarr, also a grandson of Domnall.
If anyone can read Irish script you might be able to figure out what the
name is in the Book of Leinster. I have a copy of the manuscript if anyone
would like to take a stab at it.
