I put together a few annal entries and corresponding pedigrees to illustrate
the surname adoption process among some of the Donegal clans. I hadn't
noticed this before but the O'Donnell example doesn't fit the normal pattern - or
a name is missing from the pedigree. The O'Dohertys just pop up in the
annals for the first time in 1180 but the surname was undoubtedly in existence
long before that. As far as I can see the O'Boyles and O'Gallaghers aren't
mentioned in the annals prior to 1180 A.D. The MacLochlainns (a Cenel Eoghain
sept) arose somewhat later than most of these Cenel Conaill septs as a
recognizeable dynasty.

Domnall Mor
Cathbarr
Giolla Crist [O'Donnell, slain 1038]
This doesn't make any sense at face value. Unless a name is missing from
the pedigree or the annal entry concerns a different Gilla Crist son of a
different Cathbarr, which is unlikely. The eponymous ancestor here is Domnall
Mor and Cathbarr should be at a minimum his grandson according to the annal
entry. The only earlier entry is for Eiccneachain -906 - so the pedigree is
untraceable in the annals.
U1051.5
Lochlainn's son was expelled from the kingship of Tulach Óc and Aed ua
Fergail was made king.
U1064.7
Ardgar son of Lochlainn, king of Ailech, died in Telach Óc and was buried in
Ard Macha in the cemetery of the kings.
U1080.7
The defeat of Áth Ergail beside Clochar was inflicted on the Fir Manach by
Domnall ua Lochlainn and the men of Magh Itha, and therein fell the persecutors
of Ard Macha, i.e. Sitriuc ua Coemán and the son of Niall ua Serraigh and
others.
U1088.2
An army was led by Domnall grandson of Lochlainn, king of Ailech, into
Connacht, and Ruaidrí gave the hostages of Connacht to him, and they went together
into Mumu and burned Luimnech and the plain as far as Dún Ached, and they
brought away the head of the son of Cailech, and they razed Cenn Coradh and so
on.
U1111.6
An expedition was made by the Ulaid to Telach Óc, and they cut down its
sacred trees. A raid was made by Niall ua Lochlainn, and carried off a thousand
or three thousand cows in revenge for them.
