Subject: [DNA-R1B1C7] Dill of Scotland
Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2007 20:12:20 EST

I have had difficulty trying to find evidence that my Dill ancestors were
originally from Scotland. I have suspected for a long time suspect that I am
related to the Scottish McDill. My earliest known Dill ancestor was John
Dill who was recorded in 1665 on the Hearth Money Roll in the Ulster Plantation
in County Donegal, Ireland. Edward MacLysaght wrote in The Surnames of
Ireland that my surname is English. I do not think my Dill ancestors were
English. I may have finally found some evidence that my Dill ancestors were from
Scotland. David Wilson wrote in an earlier message about the web site at
_www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk/default.aspx_
(http://www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk/default.aspx) where you can see major surname distributions in Great Britain
outside of Ireland based on the 1881 census. Most of the Dill lived in
Dumfries, Scotland during 1881. The surname of McDill was not in the database.
I do not know if there were more Dill in Scotland than Ireland in 1881.
Doesn't the 1881 census suggest that the surname of Dill is Scottish?
