Hi John
Many thanks for your fascinating and helpful reply on the Muckian
surname. I like to interpret "sunk into obscurity" as meaning my
ancestors very wisely decided to keep their heads down in dangerous
times. They had a little difficulty with the McMahons back then, I
believe.
Maybe I'm biased, but I think that the rise of genetic genealogy is
especially exciting for people with YDNA links to Ireland precisely
because those monks long ago wrote down their mixture of legend and
history, giving us a resource that other groups don't have (and
wherever R1b1c7 originated, the statistics show that Ireland is its
stronghold today).
Now, at last, there is a possibility that we - or rather the experts -
can begin to unravel the strands as more and more SNPs are located to
give an ever finer analysis of our YDNA roots for comparison with the
stories. I foresee many disputes between disciplines while this
happens, but what Irishman ever avoided a good fight?
Michael
