Yes, the lion on the coat of arms is an indicator of royalty. The earliest attested british arms were the 3 lions of the Plantagenets. Welsh royal/princely lines used the lion. So did Scottish descendants of Erc mac Eochaid Munremur of the Dalriadic Scots and Irish descendants of Niall of the Nine Hostages as seen in Moncreiffe's Lyon tree in his The Highland Clans.
