John,
Remember that the putative progenitor of the Ui Neill lineage, Niall,
was given the title, "of the Nine hostages" for a reason - he had
according to legend, founded nine colonies among other peoples, and
had taken hostages from them to secure them.
The nine peoples were:
1. Munster
2. Leinster
3. Connaught
4. Ulster
5. the Britons
6. the Picts
7. the Dal Riada
8. the Saxons
9. the Morini of Gaul
I looks like good old Nial conquered most of the western world, doesn't it?
Many Irish historians on the other hand aren't even sure he was an
historical person; and those that do accept his historicity don't believe his
"hostages" were taken anywhere but in Ireland. I think we have to take these old
legends with a large grain of salt. O'Rahilly probably has something on this.
I'll have to check.
That being said, aren't there are a few other legends associating Ui Neill
or Connachta kings with Gaul? Wasn't it Nathi, one of the sons of Brian, son
of Eochaid Mugmedoin, who was said to have been slain by lightening on an
expedition to the Swiss Alps? And Nial himself was said to be slain (somewhat
improbably) by a Munster rival while on a campaign in Gaul on the banks of the
river Loire. And who exactly were the "Morini of Gaul?"
If you read O'Rahilly, the Ui Neill or northern goidels came to Ireland
from somewhere in Gaul. His theories of course do not agree with the
conclusions of DNA experts. Nor do linguistic experts agree they were necessarily
Q-Celtic or at least one of two Q-Celtic tribes to invade Ireland fairly late in
history as O'Rahilly describes. I am not defending O'Rahilly's theories.
But if it turns out he is correct than you can reverse the migration theories
emanating from Ireland to Scotland, England and last of all Gaul.
