Actually DNA research has proven it, according to one man who has published
the research. Also they are not related to the Anradan kindred, the
McSweenies, yada, yada, but apparently to the Ui Neills.
This I'd like to see. The MacSweeneys aren't the only Anradan kindred.
Also included are the Maclachlans of Argyllshire, Lamonts and McEwens of
Otter. Anradan is said to be a son of Aodh Athlaman, the King of Aileach, who
died 1033 A.D., i.e., Ui Neill.
The following is from W.D.H. Sellar's article on the Anradan kindred:
4 Argyllshire MacLeays No detailed pedigree exists for this family,
originally known
as MacDunsleve, later as MacOnlea or MacLeay, and later still as Livingstone
- David Livingstone's forebears were MacLeays from Mull. However, there can
be little doubt that they are an offshoot of the MacSweens. Leabhar Chlainne
Suibhne mentions that an early MacSween was known 'as 'MacDuinnshleibhe',
while Moncreiffe derives the family from the 'Dunsleve', who appears in the
Register of the Monastery of Paisley (supra p. 28); as already mentioned, a James
mac Dunsleve is recorded in Kintyre in 1309. These Argyllshire MacLeays
should be distinguished from the MacLeays of the north, in Invemess-shire, Ross
and Sutherland, whose surname may derive - although the matter is not beyond
dispute - from an early member of the famous Beaton family who was called 'the
Doctor' or 'Leech' ('an Lighiche') - whence 'MacLeay' - and not from an
ancestor called 'Donnsleibhe'.32
There are eleven Sweeney DNA samples on Ysearch and Sorenson. Six of these
are NW Irish - but two are obviously cousins - so five samples is more
accurate. There are five other samples that are not NW Irish. The only known
origins for any of them are in Limerick, Cork, Galway and Sligo. None from
Donegal - the main location of the sept.
Do the five NW Irish samples "prove" the MacSweeneys are descended from
Anradan, ie, Ui Neill or NW Irish? Not to me. Especially when so far not a
single Lamont sample tests NW Irish. We have yet to locate a NW Irish McEwen
sample either. Preliminary results from our McLaughlin surname project show
the Scottish Maclachlans match the R1b-Sc modal.
