Hi John and Richard -
I read with interest your comments about Scotland and Ireland. That
is exactly my family tree. While they emigrated from County Down to
Virginia in 1753, some of the Irish literature says they moved from
Galloway to Ireland in the 1600s (perhaps returned to Ireland).
I have just finished reading "A History of Dumfries and Galloway" by Sir
Herbert Maxwell. On page 33 it talks of the races contending for formerly
Roman area and included
"(3) the Scots from Erin, also Goidelic, but distinct from the Picts, not
yet firmly settled in Lorn and Argyll under Aedan, the grandson of Fergus
Mor Mac Eirc, but making descents wherever they could find a footing and
destined to give their name to Alban in later centuries as "Scotland".
They were "Scotti per diversa vagantes" - Scots wandering hither and
thither - as Ammianus Marcellinus describes them in the fourth century.
I also refer you to number 89. Muireadach (III.): son of Eoghan
(Eoghan, or Eugene, or Owen was a son of Niall Mor). Muireadach was married
to Earca, daughter of Loarn, King of Dalriada in Scotland, and by her had
many sons and daughter, two of them are especially mentioned: - Muirceartach
Mor, and Fergus Mor, both called "Mac Earca." From this Fergus Mor
descended the Kings of Scotland, and thence, through Queen Matilda, the
Kings of England, including the Royal Houses of Plantagenet, Stuart, and
D'Este. Among his sons was III. Fearach (or Fearadach), ancestor of Mac
Cathmhaoil (or Cowell, Campbell, Etc.).

It sure would be nice to be able to get a good paper trail on this
family line !!!
