Subject: [DNA-R1B1C7] Interpretation of 37-marker match
Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2007 06:18:24 -0700 (PDT)

Dear Listers:

My brother, who has been tested by FTDNA and confirmed
as R1b1c7, has an exact 37-marker match with someone
who has the same surname. A pretty good paper trail I
put together before DNA testing was available
indicates that my brother and this distant cousin have
a common ancestor within 5 generations (we are
descendants of two immigrant brothers, in other
words.)

My question is: since our cousin has not been tested
for R1b1c7 (M222) and is still listed as R1b1, can we
assume that he is R1b1c7 on the basis of the matching
haplotype and surname? Is there any advantage to
ordering the SNP test at this point? FTDNA assigns him
to the Niall descendants. We have ordered a 67-marker
test, BTW.

Thanks,
Terry Strasser
