The Galloglas were clans of Scots mercenaries who sold their services to Irish Chieftains. Many, like the Sweeneys, were given land in payment and became irish clans themselves. My Coll line spupposedly began with a group of McColla galloglas who settled in Donegal. There are several good books on the subject--but I am onthe road and they are home inmy library.
