David Wilson posted this link a while ago on this list to members of his
R1b1c7 Project. I'll re-post the link for those who have just joined the list.
R1b1c7 Project Haplotypes
If all R1b1c7 would join this project it would be helpful.
One thing he noticed was that both the O'Dohertys and McLaughlins of Donegal
are a modal 18 at DYS 458. The modal for R1b1c7 = 17. What do these two
families have in common? The exact same geographical area (Inishowen
Peninsula, Donegal) and a supposed descent from Nial 'of the Nine Hostages' through
his sons, Eoghan and Conall gulban, both ca. 450 AD. I'm not saying this is
some kind of Nial identification factor. But it does appear in both families.
We have a lot of DNA samples for Dohertys, McLaughlins and some Gallaghers.
The Gallaghers were also said to descend from Conal gulban, son of Nial.
The three modals are:
MacLochlainn of Tirconnell modal 13 25 14 11 11 13 12 12 12 13 14 29 18 9
10 11 11 24 15 18 30 15 16 16 17 11 11 19 23 17 16 17 17 37 38 12 12
O'Doherty modal 13 25 14 11 11 13 12 12 12 13 14 29 18 9 10 11 11 25 15
18 30 15 16 16 17 12 11 19 22 17 16 18 17 38 39 12 12
Gallagher modal 13 25 14 11 11 13 12 12 12 13 14 29 16 9 10 11 11 25 15
18 30 15 16 16 17 12 11 19 23 17 16 18 17 38 39 12 12
Note: the O'Gallagher modal at DYS 458 = 16.
The Ewing modal, thought to originate near Loch Lomond in Scotland, is as
follows:
Ewing Modal 13 25 15 11 11 13 12 12 13 13 14 29 17 9 10 11 11 25 15 18 31
15 16 16 17 11 11 19 23 18 16 18 17 37 38 11 12
If we compare these modals by genetic distance, the O'Doherty and
O'Gallagher modal are a GD of 2. The McLaughlins are a GD of 6 with both O'Doherty and
O'Gallagher. And the Ewings of Scotland are somewhat more remote from
either. GD of 8 with McLaughlin; 9 with O'Gallagher; 10 with O'Doherty. All 37
marker modals.
I don't know what this tells us. Maybe nothing. Maybe you shouldn't use
modals to compare groups of people (although in this case there is a strong
likelihood all are related at some point.) The O'Dohertys, McLaughlins and
O'Gallaghers are all related by pedigree to sons of Nial; the Ewings seem to
emanate from a common ancestor who lived in northern Ireland in the 17th
century (If I'm incorrect about this David can correct the statement) but came
there from Scotland. And the R1b1c7 implies some kind of relationship in the
past.
