My most distant known ancestor is one Patrick Vance who was living in
Franklin Co., Georgia back in the 1780s. How or when he arrived in the
colonies or the states has not been documented. (Sound familiar?) There
is some hearsay that he hailed from County Cork in Ireland, but I have
had no luck in substantiating that claim. Hence, my interest in pursuing
Vance via genetic genealogy.

For what it's worth, MacLysaght (Surnames of Ireland) says this about Vance:

"(derived from an old English word meaning a marsh or fen). This name came
to Ireland in the early seventeenth century and has since become numerous in
Ulster."

That's code by MacLysaght to imply plantation stock, either English or
Scottish.
