Just wanted to say thanks to David Wilson for starting this list and to
introduce myself.
My most distant known ancestor is one Patrick Vance who was living in
Franklin Co., Georgia back in the 1780s. How or when he arrived in the
colonies or the states has not been documented. (Sound familiar?) There
is some hearsay that he hailed from County Cork in Ireland, but I have
had no luck in substantiating that claim. Hence, my interest in pursuing
Vance via genetic genealogy.
Currently, I'm the lone R1b1c7 in the Vance surname project. The bulk of
the participants are descendants of Vans/Vaus of Barnbarroch in Wigtown.
Their HG is R1b1c.
My closest matches at 37 markers are for surnames McHarg, Glenn and
Bland. Ysearch indicates that the first two are positive for SNP M222.
Biggest surprise to date was the discovery that I don't match the
Barnbarroch Vances. All my distant cousins on the Vance side have
claimed them so it's somewhat amusing to learn this. Nothing like
destroying years of hard (guess)work with a simple test. lol.
Happy hunting,
Harold Vance
