John,
I would see Greggerson as being simply a transliteration of Gregorson,
which was, like Grierson, in some cases used as an "English" version of
MacGregor.
I surmise that either a clerk somewhere wrote down what he thought he
had heard, or perhaps member of that family wanted to "Americanize" the
spelling. Remember that as recently as the early 20th Century names were
still being adjusted to suit the owner, certainly in Australia, and I
would be very surprised if the same was not true in the USA. For
instance, I know of a family that moved their name from Growcock to
Grocott during the previous century, some members using either name at
different times. The family you refer to might well be Irish (although a
Scandinavian ancestry could also be a consideration). That doesn't mean
that they used that spelling in Ireland. A test for haplogroup could
solve their riddle, particularly if they came up R1b1c7!
