This list has been created to facilitate genealogical research by those who
belong to Haplogroup R1b1c7, which is the formal designation for the clade
(or haplogroup) defined by the M222 mutation on the human Y-chromosome.
Those who carry this particular marker have roots in Northern Ireland and
Lowland Scotland. Many different surnames and clan names are associated with
this haplogroup, and it is not unusual for individuals of different surnames
to have haplotypes that are quite similar to one another.

This list is intended to supplement surname lists and geographical lists,
not replace them. Not all descendants of Irish and Scot ancestry belong to
Haplogroup R1b1c7, and in many cases those who share a single surname will
belong to several different haplogroups -- not just Haplogroup R1b1c7.
