Hi Dianne,
I'd love to see what you've got on this William! I believe this is the same man I mentioned -- Billye Snedeker Thomas may have more to say on his story, as she's a direct descendant.
I think there's wrong info in some of the databases on him however, unless we've got several William Sned families floating around IN together. For instance, the William who died in 1909 ('07 ?) had a son William Jr, and I've wondered what became of him. Another son was named Phillip Sherd Snedeker -- a most unusual middle name, and I've also wondered if it was a version of "Chaird" or "Cheard"< a family the Sneds married with in NY. If so, that might give us a clue as to where this William has connections.
And even though we aren't yet able to link him to my great-great-great grandmother Elnor, she seems to share a similar pattern -- both were born in Middlesex Co (probably S. Brunswick), both later seem to have had some link to NY, and both moved west to end up in Vigo Co.IN Hmmmm...
William's wife was named Carrie, probably Caroline, and lo and behold there's a strange db entry out there showing a William Snedeker b 1835 NJ with wife Caroline b ~ 1841 NJ -- but a different list of kids! This William-Caroline family shows up the in IN census records too, so they were real. In 1880 they had kids:
- Mary B. b ~1863 IN (??)
- Theodore b ~1868 NJ
- Elizabeth b ~1871 NJ
- William b ~ 1873 NJ
~ Lorena b ~ 1880 IN
Looks like they might have just arrived in NJ the year of the 1880 Harrison Twp, Vigo Co census. However I've seen another listing of this family also from 1880 [ microfilm of 1880 census] that gives the following kids:
- Ralph b ~ 1859 MD (??!)
- Ben b ~ 1862 MD
- Katie b ~1864 NJ
- Theodore b ~ 1868 NJ
- Lizzie b ~ 1871 NJ (must be "Elizabeth" above)
- William b ~ 1873
- Louvinia b ~ 1880 (must be "Lorena" above)
No idea why the difference in older kids. This family was living on the same street as Elnor Snedeker and Ralph R Conover, a few houses away.
I originally thought the "Mary B" in one of the entries might have been "Mary Belle", and turned out to be the Belle Snedeker b ~1862 who married Elnor's son Ralph L. Conover. But so far no proof of this.
If Belle, Ralph L's wife, was instead the oldest daughter of the William b 1837 and died in 1909, then there seems to be a big gap between her and some of the rest of William's children, who were been born in the 1880s. The marriage date I've heard of for this William and wife Carrie is 1858, in Terre Haute, which fits to be Belle's parents. I've wondered if the later children might be GRANDchildren of William and Carrie, possibly children of his son William??
To add to the mess, What about that other entry in the databases for a William who married "Caroline spurling" and had kids Katie b 1864 NJ, Theodore b 1868 NJ and Ralph C b 1859 IN??? That sounds like a mix of the others.
And then of course the the entry in the Vigo Co birth records of a (I think I've got the names in right order!) William Sned and wife "Lizzie Spurling" having a son James in 1886 in Vigo. Who are these folks? There was a Caroline Snedeker back in NJ married to Elnor's nephew David, but that family definitely stayed in NJ.
Confusion reigns! Any insights in getting clear of this will be most welcome!
Kath
