Jonathan,
While you are in London you should also consider the Society of Genealogist
who have a fine collection of parish register transcripts(Check their
library on www.sog.org.uk) and the LDS central library usually near Hyde
Park but currently "borrowing" ( Kew http://www.londonfhc.org/), they have
more on microfilm than is currently on Family Search.
Note Kew is the National archive and with the exception of census and
military records are mostly "state department" records with limited personal
information. It is a great place to visit and you get access to the
original records but search the catalogue (
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm ) . This also includes an A2A
search which includes the Devon archive catalogue.
I have found that it pays to decide in advance what records you want to see,
it is too easy to get distracted. Also take a digital camera as well as a
pencil. The National Archive also has some useful how-to guide online.
Regards
Paul

Subject: [DEV] Best Resources to visit during UK trip?
To: Devon List <>
Message-ID: <>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Hello fellow Devon listers,
I've recently been informed that my work will be sending me to the
UK at the end of May, and I am planning on doing some research into my
family while I'm over there. Right now, I'm primarily interested in learning
more about six or so individuals, and I was wondering whether those of you
who are more familiar than I am with what's available might point me in the
right direction in terms of which resources I should look into.
I'm already planning on visiting the National Archives at Kew and
the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, but I'm not sure whether it would
be worth it for me to take the bus to Exeter to visit the DFHS Tree House
also, since I've already queried their baptism, marriage, and burial indices
online, as well as received facsimiles of various parish registers by post.
Can anyone enlighten me as to whether there are records there that would not
be available either in Kew or PWDRO?
Thanks,
-Jonathan
PS: If it helps, my research focuses on the following individuals:
William DRAKE[1], born 1828 in Devonport: For him, I already have: GRO
Marriage Certificate, Facsimile of Parish Register Marriage entry from DFHS,
GRO Birth Certificate of his son, 1851 census record, Death Certificate from
the USA.
Elizabeth Ann DEEBLE, born 1828: William[1]'s wife. For her, I already have
the same documentation as I do on William[1], as well as IGI records of her
baptism, and 1841 census records.
William DRAKE[2]: William[1]'s father, according to William[1]'s marriage
certificate. Was a rigger in Devonport, presumably in the dockyard. This is
all I know about him; he doesn't appear in the 1841 census or any subsequent
one, nor in any of DFHS' electronic indices.
Harriet DRAKE: William[1]'s mother, at least according to William[1]'s death
certificate. May have been the same Harriet Drake born 3 January 1807, whose
record was sent to me by the Stoke Damerel OPC. Other than that, I know
nothing about her; she doesn't appear in DFHS' electronic indices either.
William DEEBLE: Elizabeth's Father. Was a laborer at the "dock". For him I
have DFHS and IGI records for his childrens' baptisms, but no birth or
marriage information. Apparently he died before the 1841 census, but he
doesn't appear in DFHS burial indices.
Ann CHUDLE: Elizabeth's Mother. For her I have DFHS and IGI records for her
childrens' baptisms. Apparently she also died before the 1841 census, and
may appear in DFHS burial index, but can't be sure it's the right person.
