The Devon Wills Project, which is creating a finding-aid in the form of a consolidated index of Devon wills, administrations and inventories, covering original documents, probate copies, transcripts and abstracts, is now in its final stages. Information about more than two hundred thousand Devon wills, etc., has been collected from over four different hundred sources (such as calendars, catalogues, books, journals and web sites) in an attempt to compensate for the destruction during World War II of the Exeter Probate Office and its entire holdings.

The Project pages are at:

Have you checked to see if the Project's consolidated index contains any information of relevance to your researches?

The sources that have been investigated by the Project of course include the various catalogues at the Exeter and the Plymouth Record Offices. However we have found that a (small) number of entries in their catalogues just indicate the existence of a will, without giving any information regarding the testator's name, date of the will, etc.

Understandably the hard-pressed Record Office staff do not presently have the time to investigate these issues. Do you visit the Plymouth or Exeter Record Offices, and would you be willing to help with this task?

If so, my colleague Richard Grylls <>, who organises the Project's use of volunteers, would be delighted to hear from you.
