I'd read that as John being baptised in Barnstaple (not born) in 1795 and
received in Bishop Tawton a year later, suggesting the first was a "private"
baptism, not the full ceremony else why was there a second?
A transcript of Barnstaple Parish Register 1538-1812 is on
There's an Eliza baptised to John & Elizabeth Britton at Barnstaple on 21
June 1797, and a Mary Ann to them on 20 Sept 1791. I didn't find a son named
John but you really need to give it a visual check as the OCR reading of the
scans is not perfect leaving chunks that don't show up in a search.
The private baptism _might_ have been done by anyone, hence it didn't get
into the register??? Just a guess by me...
John son of John and Eliz bp May 1795 Barnstaple rec 15/8/1796, does that
mean he was born in Barnstaple and the family moved to Bishop Tawton?
