As Bishops Tawton is on the outskirts of Barnstaple, it could easily have
been a case of the mother Elizabeth giving birth away from home, at her
mother's house for example, and then a sickly child being privately
baptised, perhaps even by the midwife.
A year later, when the child had survived, he was 'received into church' in
the mother's parish. This would place on record the fact that the child had
been baptised.
