Subject: [DEV] Increase in GRO Certificate Fees
Date: Fri, 12 Mar 2010 22:08:52 -0000
Firebird mentioned that .... the new fees are 'not that great an increase when you realise it hasn't changed over the last 7 years. .... It won't be much cheaper to get the certs from the local register office either.'
While both points are valid it is also worth noting that the GRO intend to remove their online reference checking facility. This means that if I am looking for a birth of someone with a common surname, I will no longer be able to place conditions about the parents or occupation within the request. Add this to the fact that each order will cost the full £9.25 (no more partial refunds when the request proves to be the incorrect person) and life will become very expensive for the SMITH, JONES and BROWN researchers.
At least the local register offices will still be (mostly) prepared to check the request against the references we give them and refund our full fee if the entry is not the correct one.
