Subject: [DEV] Devon DNA Project

Some of you will know that I set up a Devon DNA Project at the end of
March. Since that time the project has grown considerably and we now have 38
members. The company who are doing the tests currently have a special summer
promotion which lasts until 24th June. You can find out more on the project
website:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Devon
The offer only applies to kits ordered through geographical projects such
as my Devon project or through surname projects (such as my Cruwys/Cruse
project).
The catch is that the current offer only applies to men, so if you are
female you will have to recruit one of your male relatives to take the test on
your behalf. Project members must also have a proven paper trail to Devon.
The results so far have all been very interesting. One project member who
had her mitochondrial DNA tested was found to belong to the rare and
ancient haplogroup HV, and is the only known person from Devon with this
haplogroup to date, and one of only a few in England. I've also just signed up to
the project the last in a long line of GIFFARDS who go right back to the
1200s and it will be very interesting to see his results. There are no doubt
many other Devon lines which are near to extinction and I would really like
to get them in the project before it is too late.
If you have any questions about the Devon DNA Project or DNA testing in
general please reply to me off list as the Devon-L list is not the place for
such discussions. There are numerous DNA-related mailing lists and a good
starting place is the website of ISOGG (the International Society of Genetic
Genealogy) which offers independent advice:

Finally I would like to thank Brian Randell for giving me permission to
post this message.
