Hi folks

I have been working recently with Yvonne Casely, Greg Ramstedt, Fay
Sampson and Sue Frost on the earlier roots of the family of Ambrose
Frost and Phillepa nee MAY (widow of Edward May). These two had the
first Frost baptisms in Moretonhampstead:
Agnise 1637
Anna 1641
Ambrose 1644 who married Mary POOKE and not Temperance or Tamper Allan
as stated on other websites - see below.

A detailed search of the Exminster Frost families on the baptism and
marriage registers in the early 1600s refutes some fairly muddled work
published on Genes Reunited and Kindred connections - dates impossible
or wildly improbable etc.

Not all is yet known but this is what we now believe to be the case
regarding the Ambrose FROST - eponymous ancestor in Moretonhampstead:

The earliest Frost baptism at Exminster, an Ambrose Frost, was baptised
17 Feb 1597 to father John. John shortly afterwards married Anne
Pigeslie (? Pugsley)at Exminster, 29 August 1597 and subsequently baptised:
Margaret 28/2/1599
Anne (two entries) April 1602
George 27/12/1605

Also at Exminster, an Ambrose Frost married Ellinge ??? (? Ellen) 29 May
1600 and baptised:
Matthias 21/3/1602 (possibly the Mathias buried subsequently at MH?)
Marie 17/12/1604
Perhaps they also baptised an Ambrose, as there definitely were two
Ambroses subsequently baptising children at the same time - ours in MH,
and the other one in Exminster, whose wife *was* Temperance Allen - the
latter couple married 10 Jan 1632 at St Martin Exeter. This is where
the mix up on the other sites comes from I'm sure.

Ambrose's and Temperance's children were:
Elizabeth bapt 20 Sept 1635
John bapt 20 May 1638, died 6 Aug 1638
Another John bapt 27 Feb 1639
Another Elizabeth bapt 27 Feb 1639 died 3 Aug 1651
Susan bapt 1 Nov 1642, died Aug 1643
Ambrose bapt 9 Nov 1645

There were four other baptisms at Exminster to an Ambras/Ambrose with no
mention of a wife's name - three before Ambrose and Temperance married
and one - Ambrose - after. The unknown mother of the Ambrose 'alone'
baptisms after 1623 was almost definitely Bridget ROBBYNS, baptised at
Exminster, 12 AUG 1593, father William. Ambrose Frost and Bridget
Robbyns married at Exminster, 22 June 1623.

Their children were:

Willyam bapt 2 Dec 1623
Anne bapt 2 Oct, 1625
Elizabeth bapt 25 December 1627
Ambrose bapt 7 July 1633, who died 29 July 1638*.

So perhaps this father was our Moretonhampstead Ambrose whom I suspect
married elsewhere before remarrying Phillepa?

Then our Ambrose and Phillepa married around 1635/36 and their thirld
child, Ambrose was born in 1644*.

Fay is going to look up a burial for Bridget Frost (nee Robbyns), which
might strengthen the belief she was *our* Ambrose's first wife, if she
died at or around the time their last child, Ambrose was born in 1633.

I am copying this to some of you with common Moretonhamstead Frost roots
who may not currently be subscribed to Devon-L. Please let me know if
any of the above is disproved by *hard evidence from source documents*
(rather than from Mormon ancestor submissions, Genes reunited or Kindred
Connections).

The next roadblock is where the fathers of the first two Ambroses in
Exminster were from - John Frost and his possible brother - before
moving to Exminster, as they don't appear to have been baptised there.

Good teamwork folks!
