MUGFORD is another such name. Many men and families from Devon
migrated to Newfoundland (now part of Canada) in the 1600s, 1700s and
1800s to pursue fishing and other commercial activities. The new
Mugford Surname DNA Project
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/MugfordProject
seeks to link Mugford males in Newfoundland who are descended from
these men with Mugford males still in Devon. The geographic
concentration of Mugfords in 1881 in Devon and parts of Somerset and
Cornwall also raises the question of how many Mugford patriarchs there
might have been originally (the so-called single-founder hypothesis).
The project seeks also to prove or disprove this hypothesis for
both Devon and Newfoundland.

These are ambitious objectives and a good number of male Mugfords will
need to be tested for the standard genealogical Y-DNA markers. If you
know a male Mugford who might be interested in participating in this
project, please mention it to him.
