Hi everyone,

I would like to say publicly, thank you to everyone on the Devon list who
answered my query about the ELLIOTT/PHILLIPS family.

I have put things together and would love your opinions once again.

I am now inclined to think that my William and John are the same person.
Here is my evidence:

My Susan Jane ELLIOTT born about 1852, Devonport, Devon, father William
ELLIOTT, a Blacksmith, mother Mary Jane PHILLIPS (from her Victorian
marriage certificate, to James Patrick TYRRELL).

Her mother Mary Jane ELLIOTT nee PHILLIPS, married a second time in Victoria
1880 to Thomas SWAN, widow since 1871, father William PHILLIPS a Hatter,
mother Jane ANDERSON, born Falmouth, Cornwell. Date of birth unreliable as
she stated on this certificate she was 38, making her 42. Her daughter
Susan was born about 1852.

She died 1888, in a Lunatic Assylum, with parents etc unknown.

Based on this I looked for a marriage of a Mary Jane PHILLIP and William
ELLIOTT. I haven't to this date found anything. However I did find a
marriage for a Mary Jane PHILLIPS and John ELLIOTT, May 11, 1850, Stoke
Dameral, Devon. Mary Jane aged 20. John aged 22.

John is listed as a Balcksmith (as for William's daughter Susan Jane). Mary
Jane lists her father William PHILLIPS as a Hatter as she did in her second
marriage certificate.

Now I looked for a birth for Susan Jane to William ELLIOTT and Mary Jane
PHILLIPS and found nothing. I also looked for a birth for Susan Jane to
John ELLIOTT and Mary Jane PHILLIPS and found this:

Susan Jane ELLIOTT born 17 May 1853, Plymouth, Devon father John ELLIOTT a
Smith and Mother Mary Jane PHILLIPS.

I haven't found any census returns for a family of William Elliott at all
only John ELLIOTT in 1851 with daughter Susanann (as spelt) aged 1 month.

I would love to hear from anyone in Victoria researching this family.

Sorry for it being long winded but I really would love your opinions as to
whether William and John are the same person or not. My husband isn't
convinced but I am starting to be convinced.
