Thanks Alan - I do like the 1861 Tavistock entry - apart from the age (which
does looks like 51 to me). The John Veal in Clerkenwell is the right age,
but the wrong occupation - although he is perfectly free to change that
without asking me first (!)
I do have a problem in the martial status in both of these entries though -
John was married in 1856 to Elizabeth Ann LOBB, however Elizabeth was only
16 when she got married - and the first child I have found was born in 1863.
I will have to try and find her (maybe with her parents) and see what
information that gives me.

Judy,
There is a John VEAL (without the second "e") pauper, in the Union Workhouse
in Tavistock, 1861, but his birth year is not 1837, it's given as about
1810. His occupation is listed as "Stone Mason" If you look closely at his
age on the original image, it could be 51, or it could be something else -
what do you think?
The reference from Ancestry is: Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 1460;
Folio: 59; Page: 29; GSU roll: 542816 (I haven't checked this, it's right
off of Ancestry)
Hope this helps
Alan
