Judy,

There is a John VEAL (without the second "e") pauper, in the Union Workhouse in Tavistock, 1861, but his birth year is not 1837, it's given as about 1810. His occupation is listed as "Stone Mason" If you look closely at his age on the original image, it could be 51, or it could be something else - what do you think?

The reference from Ancestry is: Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 1460; Folio: 59; Page: 29; GSU roll: 542816 (I haven't checked this, it's right off of Ancestry)
