Hi listers
I have been researhing my CARPENTER family from Hessenford. My 2x grt grandfather James Carpenter was born c1830. He married Elizabeth Cole born in Buckfastleigh and I have not been able to find this marriage record yet. There first child was born in 1864.

I can not find him in 1861 or his wife under her married or madien name. Accourding to the 1901 census he was an Army pensioner. I am wondering if at the time of the 1861 census he was in the army? I have found him in all the other census years. Some time between 1881 and 1891 they moved to Hennock in Devon.

What I want to know if he was in the Army in 1861 which army would he posssibly have been in? And if he was out of the country in the army where would he have been?
