Thanks Bill and Edna.
It is fairly well established that Mugford is actually of Devonian origin,
not Newfoundland. It is more than certain that any Mugfords in the New
World actually are immigrants from England. My question really is when and
where they 'came ashore'.
It would be easier to trace a Newfoundlandian(?) or US Mugford back to when
his forebears sailed there than trying to find which part of the English
Mugford family emigrated.

I keep coming across a bloke from the US - James Mugford (19 May 1749 - 19
May 1776) - who was a captain in the American 'Continental Navy, fighting
against the British.
It seems he's a well-know figure in US history.
Does anyone know, or where can I find out, how James Mugford might be
related to the Mugfords in Devon? My bit of the Mugford tree goes back
directly to Hartland in 1558 and I was wondering if there was any chance of
a link with him somewhere.
Has anyone else from the US or Canada done Mugford family trees that trace
them firmly back to England?
