Is anyone able to search for any references to the name PULLING in Chudleigh
in early days? I understand the DFHS baptism indexes start at 1813 and the
man I want was born about 1737(possibly!)
This is the info I have:
Sam PULLING was transported to New South Wales in the 3rd fleet in 1791. In
NSW he had a daughter, Ann, with another convict.
He died 28 March 1820 in Sydney, and his age was given as 83. Don't know
how accurate this is, but it's all I have to go on, giving him a birth date
of about 1736 or 37. There is no other useful info on his burial record, or
on official convict records.
Recently I have tried to find out details of his crime, via the Devon Record
Office, and then a private researcher to look up Assizes records in London,
and the following is all the info that seems to be available:
"ASSI23/8 Gaol Books Western Circuit
Devon Lent 1790
To be transported beyond the seas for the term of seven years
po:se: Guilty of stealing the goods val. 38s - Not Guilty of breaking and
entering the house in the night
Samuel Pulling
For burglariously breaking and entering the dwelling house of William Soar
at the Parish of Chudleigh about two in the night of 16th February last and
stealing thereout 14 yards of linen cloth and other goods val. 6l. 4s. 1d.
his property."
According to the DFHS 1851 census online search, at that time there seems to
be more PULLINGs in Chudleigh than anywhere else in Devon, so I might as
well start where he committed his crime, as it is all I have. (the position
changes when PULLEN is used!)
I have found a possible on the IGI, (born a bit later), from the Independent
Chapel records, but as that is all the IGI has, there are possibly other
options, too. This one seems to have married and had a family, some of whom
would have been pretty old but might appear in a census.
Is anyone able to check parish records for me, or give me suggestions for
other avenues of research? Would there be any local newspapers which
provided court information? Devon Record Office thought not, as he wasn't a
murderer or other high-profile criminal.
Sorry to give so little info but after many years, it is all I have.
Thank you very much.
