Hi Gale and All,

It could be that the Census enumerator should have put the occupation
down as Tailor, instead he put down Dressmaker, especially if the man
was working from home.

Kind regards

Gale

Apologies if you thought I was rude. No such intention.

I was just commenting, in view of past expereience, (I have never in
15 years research found a male dressmaker in that era)that a late
husband was unlikely to be a dressmaker.

I did not mean to upset you as I obviously have. But there was no
need to be rude when someone is trying to help and be light-hearted.
I would suggest that it says “wife of a dressmaker.” Unless I am
looking at the wrong record. In which case I do apologise. I will
enter into no further correspondence in the matter.

HE was not, I submit. a dressmaker.

I would guess, as previously suggested, Lassmaker is an abbreviation
for Windlass Maker
