This may be of interest, to those researching Creber. There is still a very
fine delicatessen/grocery shop in Tavistock, bearing the name Creber, which
I believe has been in the same family for a number of generations.

Subject: [DEV] Walter CREBER c 1825 son of John - where baptized?

Does anyone have details of the baptism of Walter CREBER c 1825 to a John
and Mary (?DINNER?) CREBER?
And the marriage details for one option for his parents: John CREBER/Mary
DINNER 1815 Tavistock?
Or know for sure which Walter son of which John CREBER it was that married
Maria NORTHMORE in 1873. The cert just has them of full age and whereas
it's not hard to plonk Maria into the correct family, I have a couple of
options for Walters son of Johns with Whitchurch connections.

One is an 1823/1825 or 1827 Walter son of a John & Mary who is probably Mary
DINNER.

All info I've seen secondhand does assume that Walter and siblings with him
in assorted census records belong to parents John CREBER and Mary DINNER.
Census records states/imply he has siblings: Elizabeth m. GALE, Ann,
William, Emllyn, Jane, Richard, Mary.
And in 1851 John & Mary have a 9 yr old grdson Thomas DOWN I've not fitted
into the picture yet other than eliminating John & Mary's dtrs Ann and
Elizabeth who married LANGMAN and GALE respectively.

The census records 1841-1871 all show that Walter was born Lewtrenchard
(1841: c 1825, 1851: c 1825; 1861: c 1823; 1871: c 1827). Given the dates
for his siblings, 1825 fits ok between known children.

The Lewtrenchard OPC says he's only got (some of) John & Mary's other
children: Emmeline 1827; Jane & Richard John 1831; Mary Phillips 1834

He's not on the Tamerton CD (Buckland Monachorum, Bickleigh, Walkhampton,
Sampford Spiney, Mary Tavy, Peter Tavy, Whitchurch etc etc).

The IGI has his older siblings, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ann, William Philips as
christened North Hill, Cornwall 1817-1823 (extracted records), plus a patron
submission for Agnes Sarah 1815, Tavistock & an 1817 John (which is a bit
interesting as Elizabeth was Jun 1817 North Hill), and does assume that Mary
is the Mary/Mary Ann DINNER that Liz Peacock's WC db has her as (marr. 1815
Tavistock, again according to an IGI patron submission).

He's not on the Marystow bap. transcripts on GenUKi, nor Lydford (not that I
expected him to be, but the records were available to check).

By 1861 Walter b. Lewtrenchard had moved to East Crowndale, Whitchurch,
where he was in 1871 as well, still unmarried, and not obvious in 1881 at
all (which fits an 1873 marriage to Maria and an 1880 dth as Walter King
CREBER)

The other is the Walter bap. Nov 1828 in Walkhampton but parents John &
Grace (KING) described as of Whitchurch whom I cannot seem to find any
evidence that he survived beyond 1828 (no obvious burial or census records).

The Walters are 2nd cousins and both related to me, distantly, and on
balance I'll probably end up going with the flow and connect him to John
CREBER Mary DINNER rather than John CREBER and Grace KING

But the 1880 dth reg. which fits the disappearance of the East Crowndale
1871 son of John & Mary before 1881 is registered as Walter King CREBER.

Both have claims to have KING in their middle name, but the John & Grace one
has the more likely claim to that as it was his mother Grace's maiden name.
Walter son of John & Mary has a paternal grandmother Ann KING.

One side effect of trying to prove this, was that I found that one of the
family of John & Grace had gone to Australia and married a Tavistock lass
there (Adelaide DOIDGE in 1853), so bit by bit the mysteries get solved.
