Incest has a strange history in the courts of law, up until the early apart
of the last century i.e. 1900 it was not illegal but was an ecclesiastical
law and could only be taken up in the Bishops court and before 1300's not even
there. in the 1300 the Church said that marriage was prohibited to the 4th
generation even the 4th cousin of a God parent. God knows how they managed in
a place like Lynmouth where there where only 400 people in 1800 how could
you not marry a fairly close relative?
