In his History of Devon, Dr W.G.Hoskins says "The poll tax receipts of 1377
( after the outbreak of 1348 and also those of 1361 and 1369) suggest that
the total population of Devon was barely 73,000 .......Exeter may have had
some 2,400 people, Plymouth about 2,000, Barnstaple and Dartmouth about 1,000
each.......... Other boroughs like Totnes, Plympton and Modbury had only
300-450 inhabitants."
