Thank you to Paula and the person below for your input about DNA.
I should have been a bit clearer about the whole thing: so in answer to the
message below and to Paula asking what families I am interested in, please
see the details below:
In 1878 my grandfather, Charles Henry Toy SUMMERS was born in Falmouth,
Cornwall. The column for the name of father was left blank, hence he took
his mother's surname SUMMERS.
It was always said in the family - no secret - that his father was from the
TOY family, also in Falmouth and Penryn and probably why the name was
included in his name. The Toy family name features on a marriage
certificate and in a list of people attending funerals related to another
branch of the SUMMERS family - the JEWELLS. So, I guess it is no big leap
to assume that grandfather SUMMERS could well have been sired by a TOY.
The family "looked after their own" so the is no bastardy bond record or
parish record.
I was hoping that I could find a male TOY person who originated in the area
who would undergo a DNA test. If this matched with my male cousin I
thought I could then be sure of the TOT connection.
Perhaps I am way out in this and don't really understand just how the DNA
tests work in respect to proving lineage.
Any comments or advise will be greatly appreciated.
Diane

As I understand it, DNA testing won't prove conclusively that
there is a definite link to another family. The best it can do
is provide a probable link. No better than you have now. DNA
testing isn't a magic puzzle solver.
The best way to prove the link is to trace back step by step and
follow sibling lines forward. Through census, BMDs and parish
records, you'll be able to prove the link far more conclusively.
