Hello everyone. I'm Jan, and I'm from Ontario, Canada. The reason that I've subscribed to this list is to hopefully find more clues to my family's history in Dartmouth, Devon. Many of my family members were mariners there, several were Master Mariners, as was my great-great-grandfather, John Rich Palfery, born in Dartmouth in 1837, baptized at St. Petrox Church. His father was also a mariner, William Henry Palfery (married to Mary Bard Wills of Kingswear) in 1833, also at St. Petrox.
It can be extremely difficult for us overseas folk to find information on our families without spending a king's randsom to have others do the work for us. I personally enjoy pouring over records at the local Latter Day Saints Church. Its so exciting when you discover new information!
I have been working on our family history for about twenty years now, often hitting many roadblocks. As time goes on and more information is networked through the internet, it is becoming increasingly easier to do the record keeping.
Now, to tell you a bit about who I am researching. As I said above, I am interested in learning about William Henry Palfery and his wife, Mary Bard Wills. They were born approximately around 1810 ?? She was from Kingswear, he was from Dartmouth, and was a mariner. So far I have discovered three children, but think there may have been more, as the records at the County office only went up to 1837, which was the year my great-great-grandfather John Rich Palfery was born (third son of William and Mary). The other sons were Frederick Henry (baptized at St Petrox Jan. 18, 1834), and William (baptized Dec. 27, 1835, also in St.Petrox).
I had a great-aunt living in Torquay, Devon and once, long ago , back in the 1980's, I wrote to her and asked about the family history. She sent me information from the Palfery family bible and I am so grateful that she gave me the facts about my great-grandfather, his siblings, and their father. I hope to continue on researching, with a goal of going back to find William Henry's parentage, and perhaps, beyond. My dream is to to to Dartmouth and see the parish, perhaps visit some graves, if I can find them. That is another issue that eludes me, finding where the family is buried.
Thank you for your patience in reading my ramblings. :) If I can help someone, I will gladly do so. We have a Latter Day Saints church here in Kent, and it has access to ancestory.com , so I will do what I can.
