Usually, when DoB doesn't match under such circumstances, it's to make
the person appear older, not younger. The reason being the chap trying
to enlist was under-aged, so had to lie.

That's a possibility, but you'd need other coordinates to prove it one
way or the other.

Hopefully, it can be put down to either; faulty memory of your
ancestor in recalling their DoB or, a transcription error somewhere
along the line.
