Hi Brian,
On transcriptions, I always transcribe exactly waht I see. When entering it
into my computer database (Generations Easy Tree). I of necessity have to
have only one identity per person. I usually chhose the same spelling as
siblings/parents unless they never appear with the same spelling. However, I
also use the aka (also known as) field to record the name seen, and the date.
(or event) I am doing a one name study of GILBOURNE. In the early days, I
have examples such as Samuel GILBORN, aka GILLMAN(chr), GILMAN(1851),
GILBOND(1871). The standardised later spelling was GILBOURNE, and this
spelling I use for all Samuel GILBORNs children.
Other branches of the name use GILLBORN, or GILBORNE and these are left as
such. To all intents and purposes, they are differnt families as they don't
link to my GILBOURNEs (Yet?<g>)

See
http://home.clara.net/daibevan/WC01/WC01_296.htm
for how it looks

Hope that helps,
Dai
