When I worked in Exeter and had vague dealings with the Prison there (don't
ask), I was told that the building was unusual in preserving the original
tower required for 'the drop'. There certainly is - or was last time I drove
past - a tower in the roof.
It may just have been an urban myth.
Either way, it wouldn't have been for public hangings by that time.
