I am new to this list
I am searching for the birth date of my grandmother who gave her name as ISABELLA LEACH on her marriage certificate in 1870 with her age as 21.
Her place of residence at time of marriage was Queens Terrace, Southampton, the same address as my grandfather William Muston Need Young who was studying to join the Indian Civil service. Isabella's father's name on the certificate was John Leach, Gentleman.
William Young became Sir William Young Bt. on the death of his uncle in 1876 and Burke's Peerage gives Isabella as daughter of JOHN LEACH of Torrington.
Who Was Who, 1941 - 1950 denotes Isabella as daughter of John Leach of Exeter and Black Torrington.
I have searched LDS, 1837 online, 1851 Census and Genuki and have been unable to find John Leach or Isabella either in Devon or anywhere else.
I have two possibilities for Isabella which I found in the 1851 Census, assuming her age of 21 to be correct in 1870 but using +/- of 5 years.
1] John Leach of Cotage Crediton age 25 Agric. labourer
Wife, Letitia Leach age 23
Daughter, Mary Jane Leach age 2
2]Robert Leach age 30, living at Barnstaple
Sister, Mary Leach age 28
Chilld, age 2
One other possibility is an Emma Leach born 1849 in Black Torrington and shown as g-d of Jane Leach with mother Charlotte Leach - no husband shown.
Unfortunately nothing is known of Isabella's family. She was the only contact with the Young family and due to a divorce in 1896 it appears very little contact was had with her subsequently until she died sometime in 1925, which I also cannot verify. A mystery woman. My father was her only contact but he was in China from 1914 onwards and very little discussion on family matters ever took place to my knowledge.
I have the proverbial brick wall! Can anyone please advise me how I should attempt to proceed as I now live in Australia.
