Subject: Stuck for 35 years - HELP please!

Hi list,
Just joined the list to see whether there is anyone who could cast light
upon a 35 year old brickwall with a Devon placename...
My ancestor William Pickett at the grand old age of 82, declared on the
1851 census that he was born in MERONE, Devon. I have searched for
years trying to find where this might be but with no success.
Of course, he may have been a bit toothless and the enumerator may well
have mis-heard him, but I have never been able to find anything like it
in Devon.
Could it be a farm or small hamlet?
Any suggestions, however far-fetched, would be gratefully received.
