My thanks to those who responded to my question regarding ships being
enumerated in 1871 and 1881 whether or not at sea. I took another look
at the leaflets by the PRO and that helped me out as well. Just for
those who wondered - I have searched for John Thornborough's death from
Mar Qtr of 1861 through and including December Qtr 1895 without result.
I do know he did rejoin the Navy after the 1861 census, but am not aware
of the ships on which he subsequently served. Perhaps when the National
Archives have finished indexing their Registers of Seaman he will show
up after 1861.

I appreciate the kindness of many who helped.
