Hi Peter,
I apologise for the delay in thanking you for your helpful advice on
searching military records. My ISP has been having problems, resulting in a
massive backlog of mail.
I was lucky as I found my ancestor's discharge papers in the A2A catalogue
some time ago and it was that which put me on to the 11th Regiment of Foot.
One of the documents gave information on his occupation, birthplace and a
physical description.
I will order the relevant FHL film for the 11th. from my local Family
History Centre. However, I suspect that the only way I am going to find out
about his marriage and the birth of his children in Ireland is from the PRO
-- if they have any information on lowly privates.
If anyone has any experience on tracing the marriage of men serving in
Ireland in the 1770s, please share it as I know that there are others on
this list who are also interested.
Kind regards
Joan
