Regarding his MBE :
Usually a small country interchange station, Westbury would have been a
hive of activity in the Great War as it served much of the great complex
of wartime military camps on that end of Salisbury Plain.
As Station Master, Herbert would have been responsible for the all the
movements of Troop trains, food and supplies, ammunitiion, and so on
that the camps needed or generated. Without being able to check at the
moment, I think much of the traffic would have been loaded or unloaded
at Westbury, not just passed through to a branch line. If the Station
Master managed to keep all that operating efficiently, I should think
he more than earned his MBE !
Cheers,
