Subject: [DEV] Cornwood School, Devon

Hi All,

This is when I wish I had done Latin instead of German at school, not
that I remember much German!

Can anyone help with three inscriptions above three windows in Cornwood
School, Devon?
(Will ring the head teacher after half term)

FIDELI CERTA MERCES
NOS NOSTRAQUE DEO
NEC PRAEDA NEC PRAEDO

(AE is a diphthong in PRAEDA and PRAEDO)

Wonder if the last line is in any way a play on words, as the local
landowner, who probably contributed to the cost of the school, was
called William Mackworth Praed. (praed in Cornish is related to the
word for meadow , but in Latin has another meaning)

Have tried Latin translation sites without much luck.

Flower Festival in Cornwood Church and Art Exhibition at Delamore House,
Cornwood, over this weekend, if you are in Devon.

Many thanks,
Maureen Selley
