I have an interest in John Pearse who was an inmate of Okehampton Workhouse in the 1871 census, previously having been a woolcarder and a greengrocer. By 1883 at the latest he has acquired a reputation around the inns of Dartmoor as a poet.
My questions are:-
Do records exist of when he entered and left the Workhouse ?
Would he have had access to education while he was there to enable him to wrote poetry as I feel he would not have received a formal education ?
